Cosmetic Dentist in Markham, Ontario

Cosmetic dentistry is the popular description for dental techniques that are used singly or in combination to improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth, gums and/or bite. Here at Upper Markham Dental Clinic in Markham, Ontario we are highly experienced in a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures which we can perform to make significant improvements to your smile. As well as marked improvements in how you look, many have reported spin-off benefits from having cosmetic dental work for example improved self-confidence in social and work situations.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are very thin porcelain covers that fit over the forward facing part of the tooth to mask severe staining, cracking or misalignment. Veneers are often used where braces cannot be used to correct misalignment or tooth whitening is insufficient to correct very deep staining.

Dental veneers are similar in principle to false finger nails but the placement procedure is somewhat more detailed and does involve removal of a small layer of tooth to accommodate the veneer. If cared for correctly, veneers can last up to ten years.

Dental crowns

A dental crown (or cap) can be fitted over a tooth that is significantly damaged in order to protect it and prolong its useful life. It is commonly used where a tooth is otherwise unrecoverable using techniques such as dental bonding.

Traditionally porcelain was used to make dental crowns but these had to be supported on metal bases leading to unsightly margin lines between the gum and base of the crown. More recently, cosmetically superior and stronger ceramic materials have taken the place of porcelain.

Dental bonding

For teeth that are less severely damaged, dental bonding can be used.

Here a special dental composite is bonded to the surface of the tooth to mask the defect, shaped and then polished.

Gum contouring

Some people are unfortunate in that their gum-line extends further down the teeth than normal.

This can be rectified using a gum contouring procedure whereby the gum tissue is reshaped and/or underlying bone to give the appearance of longer and symmetrical teeth.

Periodontal Disease

The term "periodontal"means "around the tooth." Periodontal disease, which is also known as periodontitis and gum disease, is a common inflammatory condition which affects the supporting and surrounding soft tissues of the tooth; also the jawbone itself when in its most advanced stages.

Periodontal disease is most often preceded by gingivitis which is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue. A bacterial infection affects the gums when the toxins contained in plaque begin to irritate and inflame the gum tissues. Once this bacterial infection colonizes in the gum pockets between the teeth, it becomes much more difficult to remove and treat. Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that eventually leads to the destruction of the connective tissue and jawbone. If left untreated, it can lead to shifting teeth, loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in the developed world and should always be promptly treated.

There are many surgical and nonsurgical treatments depending upon the exact condition of the teeth, gums and jawbone. A complete periodontal exam of the mouth will be done before any treatment is performed or recommended.

Teeth whitening

Whitening or bleaching as it was traditionally called is one of the simplest, quickest and most affordable cosmetic dental procedures.

The teeth can be whitened by several shades by the application of a special bleaching gel used in combination with a special dental light that accelerates the process. The treatment is painless and can be supplemented with the use of home whitening kits.
